The Walk: Repentance

James 4:7-12

9/27/15

This week in our series “The Walk”, a series on the book of James, we will be delving into the topic of true Repentance. One definition of Repentance is “the activity of reviewing one’s actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs.” It generally involves a commitment to personal change and the resolve to live a more responsible and humane life. I like to think of it as finding ways to acknowledge the dirt in your life (Sin) and trying to be cleansed from it (admitting you need Jesus to help you overcome them). James 4:7-10 says, “7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

When we repent before God and draw near to Him our sins will be brought to light.  The great news is that He reciprocates our movement and He draws near to us.  In this coming together with the help of the Holy Spirit, we begin to cleanse ourselves of the dirt (sin) in our lives, thus having clean hands and a pure heart, keeping our souls and hearts in tune with God.
