The Walk: Dependence

This Sunday as we continue in our series “The Walk”, we will discuss being dependent on God. As I was researching about this topic I came across this great article from Bible.org. Here is a blurb from it that stood out:

“In C.S. Lewis’ Prince Caspian, a child named Lucy encounters Aslan, the Christ-figure of the Narnia stories, after not seeing him for a long while. “Aslan, you’re bigger,” she says.
“That is because you’re older, little one,” answered he.
“Not because you are?”
“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”1
The more mature in the faith we are, the bigger God will be for us. As our vision of God becomes clearer and we understand his enormity, we learn to rest in him. We grow in our ability to depend completely on him and know that with a God as competent as the God we find in the pages of Scripture, the universe in which we find ourselves is truly a safe place for us.
At least, this is as it ought to be. Reality, for far too many of us, is quite the opposite. In spite of this large and competent God who cares for us and promises to never abandon us, we often find ourselves beset by worry, anxiety and fear. It is only the most mature leader who understands that as we come to rely on God, we find rest in this world.

I found it interesting that as we grow in our faith, Christ seems to grow with us. But it isn’t Him growing, it’s just our understanding of how big He is! When we have this view we can start to realize that everyday we can give Him control, not thinking about what plans we have for the future or where we will be and what we will do. Instead we can live in this moment, this gift God has given us, for tomorrow is not promised. James 4:13-17 says this, “13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

When we are dependent on God we can trust his directions and provisions for our lives and we can have confidence in knowing the only part of our future that matters, life eternal with Him in heaven! So I’ll leave you with a quote from Ghandi, “The future depends on what we do in the present.” What are you doing today? Are you living to be Holy as He is Holy? Are you depending on His wisdom for guidance? Lets start answering some of these questions!
