What Happens When Grace Happens: Our Merits Merit Nothing

For many of us we have been taught that all you need to do in life is work hard and be a good person and you will go to heaven. That got me thinking… what is a good person? In Isaiah 53 it tells us that “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; ….” or in Romans 3:12 we are told “12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”[b]” So here’s the deal when sin entered this world we all can come to the conclusion that we are living in sin. With that statement there is nothing we can do to work our way out of it. We can try like boy scouts to get as many spiritual merit badges as possible to make ourselves feel like we have earned our way to heaven but we cant! There is only one way in, Paul says it best in his letter to the Ephesians, he says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” You cannot earn a gift, our salvation is a gift that comes from God one that is free but it requires us to accept it and receive it!
